Standard,
2. M. Rozario the present Interpreter has, to do him only justice, great merits. He has natural linguistic gifts of a high order. He is well up in the local dialects - he speaks Portuguese, his native tongue - he is acquainted with Spanish and can interpret in Hindustani at a pinch. He has the advantage of long experience of work; he is zealous and, as I believe, completely honest. The substantial accuracy of his translations has been frequently vindicated by comparing them in Criminal causes, with depositions taken in the Police Courts through independent Interpreters, and I have never heard of an attempt being made in a Civil case, to set aside a verdict on the ground of having been obtained through his misinterpretation.
3. On the other hand, the accuracy of his renderings is continually called in question but (since the Chief Justice has adopted the somewhat singular course of refusing to hear all counter-interpretations) it is difficult to say with what justice. The Chinese of the better classes greatly dislike his interpretation and frequently complain of great difficulty in understanding him. Competent foreign linguists and colloquialists in Chinese smile at his versions.
